Specificity, An Incident Against Generalisation
Hasty generalization was a concept that we understudied in Introduction to Critical Thinking and Logical Reasoning while in university. The concept is best explained by examples. Suppose a person grew up in Ghana and is introduced to the ice cream we call 'yoghurt' here. The 'yoghurt' we know is hard iced and somewhat pinkish red. Until the individual reads wide, travel or is told there are other options. They only know of the pinkish red 'yoghurt'. If such an individual is presented with other forms of 'yoghurt'', the sure bet for such an individual is to say, hey this is not 'yoghurt'. 'Yoghurt' is pinkish red. More appropriately, a jump to conclusion in negligence
Specificity is one of the aspects of society that settles issues and concludes things. The specificity of incidents is what gives room for solid analysis and appraisal. When we are confronted with any issue with regards to life and its ceaseless set of events, our holding point or the point that can keep you standing against the odds is consciousness of your very existence and your individuality.
When given a set of issues that look ambiguous, the prudent mind must find a way to identify the specifics of such issues. By laying hold of the specifics and bearing in mind the possibility for generalisation, we anchor ourselves and those that matter to us and the expected result thereof. Our journey with ourselves and life tells us what can happen along the way, our ability to draw the lines between specificity and generalisation can act as a propulsion fuel for a takeoff.
